The USDA Summer Food Program, sponsored by First Step, serves youths a lunch each day which includes milk, a meat/protein source, fruits/vegetables and bread. Each bagged lunch aligns with the USDA's nutrition standards and is free to all children ages 1 to 18. Children receive the foods they need to learn, play, and grow during summer vacation when they don't eat at school. First Step expects to serve more than 5,000 meals this summer.

Nita Lynn, First Step executive director, said, "We are excited to offer this important program again this summer to build on our successes from last year. First Step will continue to support local families so that no child will go without a lunch this summer and we hope that the turnout this year will exceed last year's. The Summer Food Program ensures that bellies are full and students return to school ready to learn."

First Step is partnering with the Port Angeles School District, volunteers from a number of local churches, AmeriCorps, Sodexo, several local human services agencies, local businesses, farmers and interested individuals to provide the Summer Food Program this year. The program is free to all children between 1-18 years of age.
