Cancer vaccine expert to speak in Sequim

Dr. Nora Disis, one of the leading experts on cancer vaccine research, is speaking in Sequim.

Disis, a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center researcher and University of Washington professor, is working to develop vaccines that boost the immune system to prevent recurring breast and ovarian cancer.

Olympic Medical Cancer Center and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center sponsor her free presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at the OMC Medical Services Building in Sequim.

Disis and her 35-member Tumor Vaccine Group based at the University of Washington are seeing promising results. In early clinical trials of patients with metastatic breast cancer, 40 percent still were alive nine years after vaccination.
