Companionship, food and fun

Sequim Senior Singles is celebrating its 20th year of providing companionship, food and fun.
Dianne Schoof came up with the idea, and soon she was joined by three other enthusiastic volunteers.
Alice Knudsen, the only surviving founder of the group, recalled the original planning meeting was held in August 1990. “We had our first event that September at the Paradise,” Knudsen said. “We had eight people at that meeting. In two years it grew to 106.”
By its nature, she said, the number of members often changes. Some members die, some move away and some marry. Currently there are 112 members.
“In 2001 we were down to about 45, but with some help from the Sequim Gazette we were soon back up to 106,” Knudsen said.
She said the group sometimes provides something more than just a good time. “I’ve seen so many come in so devastated from loss — from death, from divorce. And then they start having fun again.”
The group meets the first Sunday of each month for a big luncheon, with other activities sprinkled through the month, including golf, pinochle, poker and bridge parties. President Bobbie Dahm said one of her favorites is the weekly coffee chats, held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hardy’s Market.
Plans are under way for the big Halloween and Christmas parties.
Dahm said the group is strictly social and still relies on members “to create the newsletter, for entertainment, for everything.”
At its founding, the group accepted only those 55 and older but in response to a request they’ve lowered the admission age to 50. Membership is drawn from every community on the North Olympic Peninsula, from Port Hadlock to the Lyre River. Dahm said some members live elsewhere and attend the get-togethers when they’re in town.
Dues are $20 a year but just $10 for the balance of 2010.
