County to get insurance settlement

Clallam County commissioners approved an insurance settlement last week to cover hundreds of thousands of dollars in public funds stolen from the Treasurer's Office between February 2004 and May 2009.

Former employee Catherine Betts was charged with first-degree theft. A state Auditor's Office investigation determined $617,467 was stolen. A trial has been set for Jan. 10 in Clallam County Superior Court.

The $597,516 settlement, through Great American Insurance Co., is based on $607,516 of fraud determined by forensic accountants working for the insurance company, minus a $10,000 deductible.

The settlement money will be distributed as follows:

State of Washington Department of Revenue $199,386.67

City of Port Angeles $34,304.25

City of Sequim $13,270.68

City of Forks $4,640.11

State Technology Fee $145.00

Clallam County Capital Improvement Projects $345,769.29
