Vigil honors Washington victims

Healthy Families brings awareness to domestic violence

Healthy Families of Clallam County brought its “Silent Witness Vigil” to Sequim on Oct. 21 to raise attention for Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Becca Korby, executive director of Healthy Families, awarded Soroptimist International – Sequim the Gratitude award for helping victims of domestic violence.

Sgt. Detective Sean Madison of the Sequim Police Department gave the keynote speech.

Washington had 76 domestic violence fatalities July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

Healthy Families served 254 victims of domestic violence during this time period — 233 females and 21 males.

Statistically, 17 of those people helped were under age 6, 54 were ages 18-24, 179 were 25-59, and 15 were over the age of 60.

Sequim had 96 reported victims of domestic violence.

Healthy Families’ two domestic violence shelters hosted 7,315 nights of safe shelter for 139 women, 135 children and three men.
