Film crew follows KSQM
by MATTHEW NASH
A film crew documenting the growing popularity of Sequim radio station KSQM finished the first half of their filming on Friday, March 4.
Insider Exclusive from Los Angeles, a group of Emmy-award-winning filmmakers, interviewed KSQM volunteers such as disc jockey Bob Massey and avid listeners throughout the week.
Jeff Bankston, station manager, said he was approached a few months ago by his college friend Robert Manciero, documentary co-director/producer, about the possibility of making a film about the station.
Bankston said the film’s focus is the radio station but centered on Sequim.
“It could be one of the best showcases of the Sequim and the Dungeness Valley,” he said.
Steve Murphy, documentary executive producer and show host, said Sequim is a great little town and that his intent is to show the impact of the station on Sequim, the struggle to get it on air and the outpouring of support for it.
“The need for a community-based radio is obvious here,” Murphy said.
KSQM, started two years ago, plays music from the 1940-1960s, like folk, jazz, swing and more, while offering news, public service announcements and local programs.
Insider Exclusive films across the country. The group made another documentary based in Seattle about the I-5 cable barrier system.
Manciero said the crew plans to come back in mid-May to shoot more film of Sequim’s scenery, activities and people.
“This is a great story and that touches a lot of people,” Manciero said.
Murphy said he plans to submit the finished documentary to film festivals and see how it can be distributed through networks.
He intends it to be a 44-minute program spread over an hour. He usually produces programs for 30-minute time slots.
Insider Exclusive programs appear on DirecTV channel 354 at 6 a.m. Sundays.
