Hume speaker at NPBA expo

The 14th annual Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo is slated for March 12-13 at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

The host, North Peninsula Building Association, has lined up Northwest gardening expert Ed Hume to headline the Expo this year.

Hume is the host of KONG TV’s “Gardening in America” and author of “Gardening with Ed Hume, Northwest Gardening Made Easy.” He will be at the show presenting “Easy Landscaping Ideas” on Saturday, March 12, at 2:45 p.m. and “Northwest Vegetable Gardens” on Sunday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m.

He also will be available for book signing before and after his presentations.

The 2011 Expo offers a variety of activities in addition to the more than 90 inside and outside booths with more than 75 exhibitors ready to talk about new home construction, remodeling, landscaping, energy or other home project needs.

Attendees may attend any of the free live demonstrations on many topics, including the 400-square-foot rule on building a garage or barn; all one needs to know about heat pumps; solar electricity for one’s home and business; ‘passive house’ construction and heating benefits; how to select a builder and other demonstrations.

Sequim High School sophomore and junior classes provide snacks and lunch items while Leonard Johnson, with the family owned and operated catering business Mystery Bay Seafood Catering, returns with seafood and other traditional fare.

John Elliott is scheduled to show off his live wood-turning exhibit, making wooden tops. Children can experience building their own birdhouse under the supervision of the 2011-2012 Future Builders students and instructors.

A live building demonstration called “re:structure re:design” also is scheduled. Peninsula College Green Construction instructor Jon Martin and students will be building a small garden shed out of recycled and salvaged building materials on the show grounds.

Capstone sponsor for the 2011 Expo is PUD District No. 1 of Clallam County. Cornerstone sponsors are Angeles Millwork and Lumber Co., Inc., Hartnagel Building Supply, Bliemeisters’ Wood Works, Inc., Built Green of Clallam County, First Federal, KSQM 91.5 FM, the Sequim Gazette and WAVE Broadband.
