Don’t be late for these very important plays
Two strong female protagonists take center stage on June 3-4 for Olympic Peninsula Academy’s two productions of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Peggy the Pint-Sized Pirate.”
Angel Love, 12, plays Alice alongside a number of crazy characters like the Mad Hatter (Aurora Gammill, 12) and the Queen of Hearts (Mary Lu Clift, 15).
Love said this is her sixth play for her school but she has never been the lead and finds it exciting. Her favorite part about Alice is her curiosity.
“I kind of relate because I like investigating, too,” she said.
Gammill said she was chosen as Mad Hatter for her energy.
“(Teachers) said I can be very hyper and that I’d be perfect for this,” Gammill said. “It’s fun to sing and my favorite part is the trial at the end. They’ll enjoy it.”
Love said audiences definitely would like the costumes and makeup.
The opening act brings together 19 students in kindergarten through fourth grade for “Peggy the Pint-Size Pirate,” including 6-year-old Paige Wessel as Peggy.
The story follows a little girl who wants to be a pirate. No one gives her a chance until the tides turn on the other pirates and she’s given an opportunity to save their lives.
Wessel is a first-time actor but is ready to perform and not nervous. She won the part because she memorized all the lines first.
Wessel said she likes that Peggy is so smart.
A total of 67 students in grades K-12 perform for the annual plays, which began in 1999.
Parents and teachers have volunteered with students since late October on the projects.
DeeDee Nielsen, academy teacher, said in years past they’ve done lesser-known plays but they thought it was time to do something better known. They also needed a play with a big cast due to their enrollment numbers.
Entry to the performances is by donation, with proceeds from tickets, a bake sale and a live auction benefiting the school.
