P.C.’s ‘Conversations’ spotlight falls on documentary filmmaker
Find out how broadcast journalism has given light to human rights issues and about some extraordinary individuals who have greatly influenced American society on Thursday, Oct. 4, when the Peninsula College Foundation hosts Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy as its 15th annual American Conversations presenter.
The evening begins at 6 p.m. in the Peninsula College Pirate Union Building with a sit-down dinner, followed by the main event at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theater at the college campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Audience members will have a chance for a Q&A conversation with Kennedy following her presentation.
Kennedy’s most recent work is “Killing in the Name,” which was nominated for a 2011 Academy Award for Documentary Short. It also was selected as the winner of the LA Shorts Fest 2010.
Kennedy’s latest directorial project, “The Fence,” premiered on opening night of Sundance 2010 to wide public and critical acclaim and debuted on HBO in September 2010 to millions of viewers.
Kennedy is co-founder and president of Moxie Firecracker Films. As producer and director, her documentaries cover an array of issues, ranging in subject from American history to immigration politics to women’s rights. They also have become vital educational tools on such critical societal topics as AIDS awareness and poverty in America.
Her output includes more than 25 documentaries, including “Ghosts of Abu Ghraib” (Primetime Emmy Award winner for Best Non Fiction Film, 2007); “Thank You, Mr. President: Helen Thomas at the White House”; “American Hollow”; “A Boy’s Life”; and “Pandemic: Facing AIDS.”
American Conversations is the Peninsula College Foundation’s signature event.

Proceeds from the event support college programs and provide scholarship assistance to students.
