Deputies discover pipe bomb on routine call

While carrying out a response for a domestic disturbance, Clallam Sheriff’s deputies made a startling discovery: a gunpowder-based 8-inch pipe bomb.

While there’s no indication that the bomb was made maliciously, the Sheriff’s Office still is taking the matter seriously.

“Someone could have been hurt pretty bad, so we’re investigating it, but at the same time we’re not taking a super aggressive stance,” said Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron.

At 11:30 p.m. on April 10, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call on Patterson Road. While the caller said that shots had been fired, it was later revealed that the sounds were only the residents using firecrackers. After assessing the situation, deputies got permission from the resident to search the house and found the bomb inside.

The surrounding residences were not in danger, but the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad still was summoned to disarm the bomb.

Deputies acquired a search warrant to find additional evidence, but discovered nothing to indicate the bomb was made at the residence or that it belonged to the individuals living there. An investigation is ongoing and investigators have planned additional interviews to determine who was responsible for making the bomb.

Whoever is responsible for making the bomb would be prosecutable under Washington law for a Class A felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The ingredients to make the bombs are all legally available on the open market, said Cameron, “but it’s when you put it all together that we start asking questions.”
