Join in Fun Walk for Sequim’s free clinic
Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic holds its ninth annual Fun Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, beginning and ending at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.
Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The fee is $10/person, free for those ages 12 and under.
Join the walk as an individual or a team and walk or run either a 1-mile or 5-mile course though Carrie Blake Park, the Water Reuse Site, and a portion of the Olympic Discovery Trail. Following the Fun Walk there are refreshments, water, free medical screenings, healthy cooking demos and a closing ceremony with an array of door prizes.
All proceeds from the walk go to the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic, Sequim’s free clinic, supplying urgent and chronic medical care and dental care for the uninsured and underinsured.
The clinic is supported by donations from the community and generous in-kind donations from Olympic Medical Center. Medical care is provided by volunteer medical providers — physicians, advanced practice clinicians and nurses, assisted by receptionists, data managers and other skilled volunteers.
The clinic and the resources necessary to run it have grown through the years: In the first full year of operation (2002) there were about 400 patient visits; in 2012 there were 2,200.
The clinic has become a primary care home for many patients and remains an urgent care center for others.
The Fun Walk began in 2005 with a handful of walkers and no fundraising goal. In 2012, there were 222 participants and $34,000 was raised through sponsorships and entry fees.
All proceeds from the walk go to the free clinic which supplys urgent and chronic medical care and dental care for the uninsured and underinsured. Volunteers always are needed.
