Sequim’s Science Cafe returns
Coming to a restaurant near you: Food for the mind.
The Science Café, Sequim Education Foundation’s educational series, is back for its second year, presenting expert speakers for adult and young adult audiences interested in current developments in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The cafe is scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month at the Paradise Cafe, 703 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.
Admission is free with food and beverages available.
The series kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 8, with Dr. Charles Brandt, director of Battelle Marine Science Laboratory, who presents “Climate Change in Ocean Coastal Zones.”
Brandt is the director of the Coastal Sciences Division within Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Energy and Environment Directorate.
An ecologist conducting research for more than 20 years, Brandt has a specialty in the area of biological fate and effects of contaminants. Brandt is also an adjunct professor in the zoology department at Washington State University.
Other Science Café events include:
• Dec. 10 — Mike Hagen and Dr. Roger Oakes, “The Science of Restoration Ecology Alive on the Hoh River”
Hagen and Oakes discuss the Hoh River Trust, an entity that owns nearly 7,000 acres on the Hoh River in west Jefferson County where it is doing both active and passive habitat restoration. The goal is to accelerate development of old growth-like forest and high quality riparian habitat in industrial timberland.
Hagen is the trust’s executive director and has more than 20 years of experience in forest management, wild land fire fighting, habitat restoration and national forest resource planning. Oakes is a trust board member and practiced medicine in Port Angeles for 37 years before retiring in 2011.
• Jan. 14, 2014 — Dr. Vicky Blakesley, “From Mouse to Man: The Development of Useful Prescription Drugs”
Blakesley is president and co-founder of Collaborative Clinical Plus, LLC, a consulting firm that assists pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies worldwide with clinical development and regulatory filings. She discusses the steps from scientific discovery through studies in humans with the ultimate goal of developing an approved prescription drug useful for the treatment of human disease.
