In the summer of 1970, Jim Caron, unemployed and searching, was heading from Chicago to a friend's wedding in Oregon when his Volkswagen van broke down on the outskirts of Missoula, Mont. While waiting for the mechanic, Caron noticed a flier for auditions to be in a play. He auditioned, nabbed a part, became friends with a fellow cast mate and started up a local theater company - and Missoula Children's Theatre was born.

MCT travels from state to state, and even to Canada, Europe and Asia, casting local children in its plays.

"MCT is really in the business of using an entertainment format to foster enrichment and education in children - of all ages," reads the organization's Web site.

Due to the support of Olympic Theatre Arts, the newest MCT production, "The Little Mermaid," is making its way to Sequim - the performance will take place at the Sequim High School auditorium on Jan. 12, but auditions begin on Jan. 7.

According to a statement by OTA business manager Loren Johnson, the audition will be a group audition and no advance preparation is needed.

"But a smile never hurts!" the statement reads.

"The Little Mermaid" is a modern take on the classic tale, written by Caron, and follows Celia, a mermaid beauty who loves music. Celia and each of her three sisters are allowed a trip to the "World Above" on their 16th birthdays and each runs into her own adventure on dry land: dragons, armies, and, of course, charming princes.

Children who try out must be prepared to attend rehearsals, which will take place Jan. 8-11 from 4:30-8 p.m. Students will be required to stay for as long as the role requires and anyone from kindergarten through 12th grade is encouraged to audition.
