For two weeks in August, hundreds of the world's top athletes will join together for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Two Sequim students are lucky enough to get a first-person view of the show.

Sequim High School student Matt Grey and SHS 2007 graduate Naomi Fosket have been invited to join 600 other American students to play with a total of 2,008 musicians from 40 countries in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Orchestra at Olympic events.

"I wasn't expecting it at all, it's such an honor," said Fosket, who said she was at Seattle Pacific University, where she is a freshman, when she got a call from her father, SHS band director Vern Fosket.

According to Vern Fosket, University of Washington faculty and director of athletic bands Dr. Brad McDavid called him and said he needed some band students to play in Beijing. Being a close family friend, McDavid specifically asked for Fosket and said he also needed a trombone player.

"Matt was my recommendation," Vern Fosket said.

According to Fosket, who has been playing the trumpet for eight years, and Grey, who has been playing the trombone for six, they will be given music to practice and attend three practices in Seattle before flying to China for 15 days. There, they will perform six or seven times for Olympic events before traveling to Shanghai to perform.

Fosket and Grey will stay in Orchestra Village, similar to Athlete's Village, in a five-star hotel.

"I hear they have a hot tub and pool," Fosket laughed. "I'm looking very forward to that."

The Sequim students are "late entries" - most of the students have known of the trip for at least a year, said Vern Fosket. Right now, the two are scrambling to raise the $4,400 they have to obtain by May 1, which covers all expenses.

To donate to the pair, send checks payable to World Projects to P.O. Box 2432, Sequim, WA 98382.
