About a dozen high school boys began singing, in perfect harmony, in the cramped boardroom during the May 8 meeting of the Sequim School District board and the usually anxious crowd sat listening raptly.
I dont even know any of these boys and I have tears in my eyes, commented attendee Berta Murillo. Wow.
Its that kind of power that allowed the 14 boys in the Sequim High School select choir mens ensemble to be the first mens ensemble from SHS to make it to the Washington State Choral Competition in Ellensburg, an honor they received after winning the February regional competition in Port Angeles.
Accompanying the ensemble two of whom were also soloists was the lone female heading to the state contest, 17-year-old soloist Breanna Krumpe.
It was pretty fun, Krumpe said of traveling halfway across the state with a group of boys. These guys are really goofy.
Both the group and Krumpe received top honors at the contest, all earning either a Superior, which is the top accolade, or an Excellent, which is the next one.
Its quite different from regionals, said the ensembles first tenor, Hunter Gilliam, 16. Ive never been in any competition like this … to get the scores we got was just the icing on the cake.
The celebration continues for the group: On May 22, they leave for the Anaheim Heritage Music Festival, a trip that the SHS band and choir take turns attending. For four days, the group will stay at Fullerton College, visit Disneyland and perform in the national festival.
Its a pretty exciting time for us, said 17-year-old Taylor Ackley, who sang with both the group and as a soloist at the state contest.
