Stevie Holloway has wanderlust.

“I’ve always wanted to travel but I’ve never gone outside the U.S., except Canada,” said the Sequim High School trumpet player.

Holloway’s desire to see the world prompted him to apply for Sound of America, a summer program that allows talented American high school musicians and vocalists to perform throughout Europe. Because Holloway had competed in the all-state competition, he did not have to submit a musical piece but he did need to get three letters of recommendation. Soon after, he learned that both he and fellow SHS musician Aaron Hodge were accepted to the program.

“I’m really excited,” said Hodge, who plays the euphonium, a baritone horn he has been playing since fifth grade.

They will meet the rest of the 100 students, six from Washington, on July 1 in Elizabethtown, Pa., where, according to Holloway, they will have an intense four-day training where they come together as a band. The music, which will be enough for a 40-minute set, will be sent to each of the students in June so they can practice on their own. After the training and a couple of bon voyage concerts in Pennsylvania, the group will head to Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Luxembourg and France.

Despite the numerous performances, the Sequim participants said they are looking forward to seeing the sights of each country, as well.

“Apparently there’s a lot of time to sightsee,” said Hodge. “I’m sure we’ll be taking advantage of that.”

The two have a large hurdle to overcome before going on their dream tour — each has to raise $5,000, which does not include spending money or the flight to Pennsylvania, by June 1. They know it will be a challenge but both students are confident that they will make it to Europe.

“I’ve seen the music they play, it’s very prestigious,” Holloway said. “I am so happy to be traveling and playing with the group.”
