Sequim High Schools Operetta Club proved that hard work pays off the group was nominated for nine 5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre awards and collected a trophy for outstanding costume design.
Were pretty excited, said director Christy Rutherford.
A group of 16 students and seven adults traveled to Seattles Benaroya Hall on June 9 for the awards ceremony.
Nominations included eight for The Wizard of Oz outstanding costume design, outstanding choreography, outstanding hair and makeup, and honorable mentions for outstanding direction, outstanding lobby display and outstanding performance by an ensemble group, for the crows. James Willis, who played The Cowardly Lion, received a nod for outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role and Danny Hall as The Scarecrow picked up an honorable mention for the same category. SHSs previous play, Krazy Kamp the Musical, also was nominated for an outstanding performance by an ensemble group, for the Mo sisters.
The award really belongs to the volunteers that made the costumes, Rutherford said, citing Darrelynne Sutton, Lori Armstrong and Jinna Bentley, in addition to the many who spent hours working on Munchkin costumes. We are so happy and proud.
