Bingo!

Peninsula residents are only a small donation away from helping raise awareness and support to fight cancer.

Laurel Park Assisted Living and the Olympic Medical Center Foundation are teaming up to host the second annual Bingo Night Fundraiser Friday, Oct. 24. Bingo cards cost 50 cents each or three for $1. Proceeds will benefit the Thomas Family Cancer Center.

"We are so pleased to be involved with this event and raise awareness for the cancer center; it is a privilege to be the recipient of this year's fundraiser," said Sara Maloney, OMC Foundation associate executive director. "It is so generous (of the Laurel Park residents) to open their home and welcome members of the community while benefiting a local organization."

Last year, the event raised $428 for the Seattle Children's Hospital Guild Association. This year, organizers are hoping to raise at least $1,000.

"At Laurel Park, our staff really likes to reach out to the community," said Elaine Reed, sales and events manager. "I saw an interview on TV about how they had given out gas cards in Seattle to people receiving cancer treatments but that the program had run out of money. I wondered if the local cancer center did things like that and it turns out they do. That inspired me to help raise money for them."

Laurel Park is an assisted-living facility that houses about 30 residents - all of whom agreed to open their home to the community for a night of fun and games. The center also hosts an annual Chocolate Festival fundraiser in February. Staff and residents observed Laurel Park's 10th anniversary last May.

The Thomas Family Cancer Center, located in the Olympic Medical Center's Sequim plaza, diagnoses and treats cancer patients. Physicians work with a team of oncology experts using the latest medical technology.

Although it's undecided exactly what area of the cancer center the money raised will impact, it will be used to benefit patients, Maloney assured.
