Sequim's commercial corridor on the west end of town continues to grow.
Two new commercial buildings, one in a new shopping center across Priest Road from Wal-Mart and another in the Costco shopping center, are both automotive in nature.
The stack of cinder blocks and rebar on the 900 block of West Washington Street, directly in front of Costco, will become a Discount Tire retail store, specializing in tires, wheels and rims.
Terry Kelly, the project manager from Discount Tire's developer Baker Construction and Development, estimated the store would be complete by mid-March. Discount Tire corporate contacts said the store might be open by late March or early April.
The footprint of the building will be 7,000 square feet but the square footage inside will be more due to second-story storage areas.
Discount Tire will be the fourth tire dealer in the city limits. Costco, which is directly behind the new structure, and Wal-Mart offer tire services on the west side and Les Schwab is located on the east end of town.
News broke in midsummer that Schucks Auto Supply was constructing a new store across Priest Road from Wal-Mart.
The auto supply store will be part of a shopping mall called the Priest Road Center, which will occupy most of the land at the intersection of Priest Road and West Washington Street.
While preparing the site for the Schucks store, developers also are preparing and constructing the general layout of the shopping center.
The Schucks store will be the third auto parts store, joining A-1 Auto Parts and NAPA Auto Parts.
In anticipation of additional commercial development on the west side of town and in response to the stores already in place, the city will make the east half of Brackett Road a one-way street. Brackett Road traffic will be allowed westbound only from its intersection with West Washington Street to where it meets North Ninth Avenue. It will be a two-way street from Ninth Avenue to its terminus at Priest Road. The city does not have a date set for when the change will take effect. The cost was expected to be about $1,500 when the city council approved the project in July.
