Neil W. Burkhardt co-owner of McComb Gardens, has received the 2009 Environmental Excellence Award from the Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association.
The award recognizes his service on the Washington State Urban and Community Forestry Program/Washington Community Forestry Council Executive Advisory Committee and the Nursery Advisory Committee to the Department of Agriculture.
Burkhardt has been reappointed to both positions for additional three-year terms.

Black Ball Ferry Line has the M.V. Coho out of service for annual dry-dock maintenance through Feb. 8. Daily service between Port Angeles and Victoria, British Columbia, resumes Feb. 9.
The 3,410-foot ferry went to Todd Shipyards on Seattle's Harbor Island for routine maintenance, repairs and upgrades. To help celebrate the M.V. Coho's 50 years of service, a new duty-free shop is being built during this dry-dock period and is scheduled to open in March.

A partnership of North Olympic Peninsula organizations including Olympic Community Action Program, Homeward Bound, Clallam County Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity Clallam County, Habitat for Humanity East Jefferson County and Jefferson County Housing Authority offers free classes for first-time home buyers. The classes prepare buyers for homeownership and familiarize them with the process and programs.
The free six-hour class schedule is 6-9 p.m. Feb. 17-18 at Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

Association of Certified Fraud Examiners awarded Mack A. Peterson of Carlsborg Investigation Services the designation of certified fraud examiner.
Certified fraud examiners are considered knowledgeable in fraudulent financial transactions, criminology and ethics, legal elements of fraud and fraud investigation.
