The banner stand at Washington Street and Sunnyside Avenue will be replaced at a new location, Interim City Manager Linda Herzog told the city council at its Jan. 26 meeting.

Because the city has grown to the east, two new locations are being considered on either side of Rhodefer Road, she said.

Herzog asked the councilors to drive past the two proposed locations and decide which they prefer. If the council approves a location, the plan is to go to bid after the Feb. 9 meeting, she said.

The city has two banner spaces, one in front of Costco Wholesale at 955 W. Washington St., the other in front of the Co-op Farm & Garden at 216 E. Washington St.

In October, the eastern banner stand became unusable after one of the supports securing the 30-foot-long, 3-foot-high strips of canvas across Washington Street broke.

The funding will come from the city's hotel/motel taxes, which are paid by visitors to the hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and other lodging businesses. The city collects about $170,000 annually.
