Charity auction will go digital

Sequim Sunrise Rotary plans to use the convenience of the Internet to the community's advantage for its next auction.

The service club will host an online auction Feb. 24-March 13 in addition to a live auction on March 15.

Rotary member Pat McCauley said the online auction might be a first for a nonprofit organization on the Olympic Peninsula.

The idea came from a Rotary Club in Poulsbo that tripled its auction earnings when it went online.

"We're doing an online auction because it opens more doors and can make more money for more charities," member Kathy Schreiner said.

The auction proceeds will be divided between five charities: The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, Sequim Education Foundation, Sequim Food Bank, Welfare for Animals Guild and Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic.

These groups also are donating items whose proceeds go back into their organizations.

When the online auction ends, those at the live auction can bid on many of the items, with the opening bid being the ending price from the Internet bidding.

"If someone wants to bid online, then they should bid high," McCauley said.

Some online items can be bought outright and will not be available at the live auction.

The club's Web page, www.sequimsunriserotary.cmarket.com, will have all the items to be auctioned. Donations are processed and put online immediately. Online bidding requires a user name and password, and items won will be paid for using a secure service.

The club still is accepting donations. Donors can choose which of the five charities will receive the proceeds from a donated item

Sequim Sunrise Rotary supports local and international programs, including Shelter Box USA, that provides disaster relief packages with basic survival tools such as a shelter and cooking supplies for 10 people.

Last year's auction helped purchase five Shelter Boxes.

"(Shelter Boxes) are usually the first thing to get in after an emergency," said Rotarian Dave Cummins.

The auction also raised about $9,000 for local charities.

A few of the items

available for auction are:

_ Dinner for 12 with three hours of Dixieland jazz band music

_ One-day halibut/salmon fishing trip

_ Three-night stay in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

• Eight-night vacation to Mazatlan, Mexico.
