Many ways to help

_ Do you like car racing? Would you like to support the American Legion 76 Freedom car? You can learn about the car, the races, the racing team and appearances by the driver Jerick Johnson at www.legion racing.org.

The proceeds go to provide a much-needed hygiene care product to U.S. troops overseas: a "4-in-1" product that contains shampoo, conditioner, body wash and shaving cream, all in one container.

_ Not into racing? What about golf?

I know we have a lot of local golfers. Here is a way to help veterans play:

Brian Coleman is providing golf-swing machines to VA hospitals. Next he wants to purchase a ParaGolfer, a stand-up wheelchair that allows a disabled or physically challenged person to stand and play golf. Check this out at www.golfsupportsourtroops.org.

__ In Forks, a

group of people is working on transitional housing for veterans. Cheri Fleck at 360-374-5011, is heading this effort. This facility, called "Sarge's Place," will have housing for 12 veterans downstairs and three veteran families upstairs.

This will be the model for a facility in Port Angeles, "Maloney Heights," and one for Sequim.

Sarge's won't be just a place to live - it will have a case manager on site to assist with VA benefits, employment, permanent housing, schooling, medical and dental benefits, mental health and chemical dependency referrals.

If you are interested in details or in helping make this happen in Sequim, contact Mike McEvoy at MMcEvoy@esd.wa.gov.

_ Spring cleaning time! There will be a Stand Down on May 7 at the Forks Elks Lodge. They are in need of

antifungal cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, combs, nail clippers and washcloths.

_ I know these are unsettled times with the economy having problems, people losing their jobs, etc. Because of that it is more important than ever that you pay close attention to proposed laws.
