The Sequim Transit Center's public restrooms at Cedar Street and Second Avenue will be locked sometime later this month from noon-4 p.m. Monday through Friday due to ongoing vandalism, said Sequim Police Department spokeswoman Maris Turner.

The restrooms normally are open from 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, closed on Sundays.

If access is necessary during that four-hour period, the person can get a key from City Hall by leaving an acceptable form of identification such as a driver's license, state-issued identification card or student identification card.

Turner said the transit center's public bathrooms are maintained by the city of Sequim.

The bathrooms are inspected and cleaned as many as three times a day and the vandalism "generally" shows up between 1-4 p.m., she said.

The vandalism has included feces spread on the walls that required pressure washing and decontamination, Turner said.

"There is expense related to the cleanup and restoration of the bathroom facilities and with the fear of more of the same behavior, the city and Clallam Transit are taking an aggressive approach," she said.

The city restrooms on Sequim Avenue that opened in February 2004 have not experienced similar problems and will remain open regular hours.
