Following a tradition that started in 1984, the Clallam County Historical Society will honor winners of the Heritage Award and the Historic Structure Award at its annual meeting, at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7.
Virginia Thomas will receive the Heritage Award for archiving, cleaning, storing and displaying hundreds of historical artifacts at Coast Guard Group/Air Station Port Angeles.
Thomas, a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and former Guard quartermaster, recently received the Coast Guard Auxiliary Commendation Medal for preserving and cataloging the artifacts and creating four display cases covering specific areas of Coast Guard history in Clallam County.
The Olympic National Park staff will receive the Historic Structure Award for their dedication and hard work in restoring the Humes Ranch cabin, the oldest surviving homestead cabin in the park, to as near to its original condition as possible.
National Park Service backcountry carpenter Don Houk, under the direction of trails foreman Larry Lack and chief of cultural resources Paul Gleeson, replaced or repaired in kind the logs, porch, roof structure and roofing.
Today, the cabin appears much as it did when first occupied, even with some of the original fruit trees in front of the former home.
The presentations will take place in the Port Angeles City Council Chamber, 321 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles.
This year is the first time names of the awards were announced before the meeting.
State Sen. Jim Hargrove will be the guest speaker. Barbara Reidel and Irene Wyman will be installed as new board members for 2009-2010. A drawing will be held for the winner of "Pioneer," a pastel by artist Sharon McComas.
Members and the public are invited.
