Second council race emerges on final filing day

The final day of candidate filing on Friday saw a second Sequim City Council race develop, plus contests in the SunLand Water District and on the Olympic Medical Center board of directors.

Sequim Planning Commissioner Ted Miller filed Friday to challenge incumbent Councilor Walt Schubert for his Position 2 seat.

A three-way race developed for the Position 3 seat being vacated by Councilor Paul McHugh.

The first to file was former Councilor and Planning Commissioner Bob Anundson. Sequim Planning Commissioner Mike East filed on Tuesday.

Then former Councilor Don Hall filed Thursday.

Those three will face off in the Aug. 18 primary with the top two vote-getters advancing to the Nov. 3 general election.

Councilor Bill Huizinga remained unchallenged for re-election to his Position 1 seat.

In the SunLand Water District, Commissioner Art Hoefer, the incumbent, filed for re-election on Friday. Albert Friess had filed for the seat on Thursday.

On the Olympic Medical Center board of directors, Phil Edin of Port Angeles filed Friday for the Commissioner District 3 Position 2 seat vacated last month by Gary Smith. Dr. John Miles of Port Angeles filed for the seat on Thursday.

Two races are set for the board of the Sequim Aquatic and Recreation Center, formerly known as Clallam County Park and Recreation District 1.

Jan Richardson filed to challenge incumbent Susan Sorensen for her Commissioner 1 seat and Noelle Levesque filed to challenge incumbent Robert Macaulay for his Commissioner 2 seat.

The Sequim School District will have one race. Incumbent Virginia O'Neil filed Wednesday to retain her Director District 2 seat. Challenger Jon Kirshbaum had filed Monday for the seat.

The other east county candidates to file as of 4:30 p.m. Friday:

_ John Bridge for re-election to the Director District 3 seat in the Sequim School District to which he was appointed to succeed the late June Robinson.

_ Beverly Horan for re-election to the Director District at Large seat in the Sequim School District.

_ Gary Coffey for re-election to Commissioner District 1 in Clallam County Fire District No. 3.

_ Arlene Engel for re-election to Commissioner District 1 Position 2 on the Olympic Medical Center's board of directors.

_ John Nutter for re-election to Commissioner District 2 Position 1 on the Olympic Medical Center's board of directors.

_ Jim Cammack for re-election to Commissioner District 3 Position 1 on the Olympic Medical Center's board of directors.

_ Jim Leskinovitch for re-election to Commissioner at Large on the Olympic Medical Center's board of directors.
