Chautauqua returns

The New Old Time Chautauqua, a musical vaudeville circus, plays on June 27 at McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

The show features music, acrobatics, juggling, fashion and storytelling for the whole family with Chautauqua veterans Smerdyakov Karamazov, Kevin Murphy, Thaddeus Spae and Godfrey Daniels along with the Mud Bay Jugglers and the Haute Trash Fashion Show.

Dr. Calamari and Acro-phelia, Circus Contraption's acrobalance duo, bring a "big-top" element to the show, while Scuff and Boom lighten the mood and balance the show with their musical duets.

The lineup includes Port Townsend magician Joey Pipia, George Renzendes and the Tool Shed Trio, and Port Townsend-to-Portland transplants Nanda. Laying the foundations are the fighting instruments of Karma Marching Chamber Band/Orchestra.

Education is a key part of Chautauqua events. Mick Bird, a former Port Townsend resident who rowed his boat half-way around the world, will share stories of his journeys.

The show is a benefit for the Aqua Chautauqua summer tour and the Community Boat Building Project of Port Townsend, where high school students learn boat building from professional shipwrights and sailmakers.

Port Townsend's Rhythm Planet plays a pre-show at 6:30 p.m. and the Chautauqua show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at The Port Townsend Food Co-op, Quimper Sound Music, Artisans on Taylor or online at www.brownpapertickets.com (under "Aqua Chautauqua in Port Townsend).
