The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society received a grant for $5,000 from the Mary P. Dociani Halloran Foundation in New York to refinish the dog kennel floors.

The society plans to place as many dogs as possible and seeks local, short-term foster care for the remaining dogs during the project.

Construction and sealing will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23, with finishing to be done early the following week, according to the society's executive director, Scott Chandler.

The dog kennel floors are cracked and have voids that trap debris and cannot be sanitized effectively.

Renovations call for floating a layer of material over the current floors to fill all voids and cracks, then sealing the floors to prevent water penetration.

A second part of the project is installation of a hot water pressure-steamer that will generate steam at 250 degrees.

This will enable the OPHS volunteer staff to sanitize the kennels and provide a safe and clean environment for our dogs.

This project was made possible by donations from the Sequim Ladies of the Elks and the 10 a.m. Kiwanis Club in Port Angeles, as well as other donors.
