"When Hurricane Jimena inundated Sonora, Mexico, with torrential rains and mud slides, Rotarians rushed in to help victims," said Sequim noon Rotary President Dick Hughes.

The path of the recent hurricane carried it north along the Baja Peninsula causing winds and rains to rake mainland Mexico, destroying countless homes and villages. Thousands of families were left without shelter, food or drinking water.

The local noon Rotary Club was asked to help by San Carlos Rotarian Joe Baum who was spending the summer in Sequim. Hughes and international service director Lang Hadley investigated the need and called for an emergency meeting of the club's board of directors to respond immediately.

The Rotary Club of Sequim made a cash donation for Hurricane Jimena relief. The Shelter Box program tapped in to its British Columbia stockpile to send rescue boxes to Mexico.

Shelter Boxes are 49-gallon containers packed with res-cue supplies. Each box includes a water purification kit,

sleeping and cooking supplies, tools, a tent and more for 10

persons. Units are strategically staged around the world ready for immediate deployment. Each Shelter Box costs $1,000 which includes staging transportation anywhere in the world and insurance. The first boxes were to arrive Sept. 21.
