Sequim Valley Airport to continue operating

The Sequim Valley Airport will continue operating despite last month's death of longtime president Winnie Sallee.

"Things are pretty much business as usual," said Winnie's son Andy Sallee on Monday, Dec. 14.

"I want to assure people the airport will continue operating. We want it to be an airport that the community is proud of and the pilots enjoy using."

The privately owned general aviation airfield at 468 Dorothy Hunt Lane features a 3,500-foot paved runway and upgraded runway lights.

Sallee said the entire family has been involved with the airport since the start and all are committed to its continued success.

Before her death from cancer, Winnie Sallee helped establish the airport overlay district that better protects the approach and departure airspace from obstructions.

She also obtained some easements for the long-term viability of the runway.

The runway just had upgraded lights installed and new striping. It could get hangars as well, Sallee said.

He also sees "a real bright future" for the airfield that could include rental cars, a terminal building and maybe a restaurant.

"I'm taking over and continuing what she was doing, with family and others assisting," Sallee said.

"We're going to miss having her as leader."
