Curbside recycling for glass no longer is available in Sequim, but it still can be dropped off at the Sequim Village Shopping Center, 651 W. Washington St., and Evergreen Collision Center, 703 E. Washington St.

"We need to get the word out that there's options for glass recycling," said Kent Kovalenko, district manager for DM Disposal and Recycling, at Monday's meeting of the Sequim City Council.

Separating out the glass is safer for those sorting the recyclables and also prevents contaminating other recyclables with glass shards, he said.

If broken glass mixes with newspaper, then that newspaper can't be sold to pulp mills, and the glass itself also can't be recycled, Kovalenko said.



Pickup too expensive

Broken glass can turn as much as 25 percent of potential recyclable material into garbage that must be discarded, he said.

If glass is separated, it can be recycled into glass but not if it contaminates other recyclables, he said.

Councilor Ted Miller asked whether the company might pick up the glass since many seniors might not be able to drop it off.

Kovalenko said that probably would be too expensive.
