This is Washington State University Master Gardener Volunteer Week, proclaimed by Gov. Chris Gregoire.

She noted 37 years of volunteer service to Washington residents to enhance natural resources and environmental stewardship, improve health and wellness, and create and sustain vibrant communities and neighborhoods.

Founded in Washington, the program now exists in all 50 states and numerous foreign countries.

More than 80 local Master Gardeners provide more than 7,000 volunteer hours of educational outreach to help home gardeners apply sustainable gardening practices.

Master Gardeners undergo an intensive training program before they are allowed to help others. Working under the auspices of a WSU Extension agent, they pass on the latest horticultural research findings from WSU to home gardeners through plant clinics, demonstration gardens and classes.

WSU President Elson S. Floyd cited the Clallam County Master Gardener's Youth Enrichment Program, which educates second-graders about plants and the environment, in his blog following a recent visit to the area.

"This is yet another important outreach contribution our resources make to the state that really cannot be underscored enough," he wrote.

For more information, call Muriel Nesbitt, program coordinator, WSU Master Gardeners of Clallam County, at 565-2679.
