Four Sequim High School seniors received the Boy Scouts of America’s’ highest honor on May 16.
Jake Dethlefsen, 18, Peter Harker, 18, Colby Robb, 18, and Sam Schwab, 18, now are among the 2 percent of members with an Eagle Scout badge.
They met leadership and merit badge requirements along with planning and carrying out a service project during their years of Boy Scouting with Troop 1491.
For their projects, Dethlefsen built an 85-foot-long fence bordering the Sequim Food Bank.
Harker poured new cement and planted a flower bed near the Sequim High School parking lot to prevent dirt from being tracked into the cafeteria. Robb built a 140-foot-long fence at Sequim Bay State Park to prevent erosion and make a corner safer for bicyclists. Schwab built eight raised garden beds at the June Robinson Memorial Park and Community Organic Garden.
All four intend to go to college.
Dethlefsen plans to attend Central Washington University and become a flight officer for the U.S. Air Force. Harker will attend Washington State University to study mathematics and pursue a career as a math teacher. Robb plans to finish an associate’s degree at Peninsula College before transferring to Eastern Washington University for sports medicine. Schwab intends to study at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington.
Dethlefsen and Schwab started in Cub Scouts’ introductory level Tiger Cubs, Robb in Cub Scouts as a Bobcat and Harker in Boy Scouts.
To join Boy Scouts, a boy must be older than 10 and younger than 18 years old, have completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award.
