The Military Quilt Group at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim, received a community service and cash award from Mount Olympus Detachment 897 of the Marine Corps League on Sunday, May 30.

Thomas Flanik, commandant for the Mount Olympus Detachment, gave the award in appreciation and gratitude for outstanding service to veterans.

The women have eased the suffering of wounded and disabled veterans by making more than 200 military/ patriotic quilts and quillos, small quilts that fold up into a pillow.

Since 2007, the Military Quilt ministry group’s work has been distributed at Walter Reed Army hospital in Washington, D.C., and Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

Group members Linda Auld, Lee Grau, Sammy Greenwood, Carolyn Hempel, Jan Hintermayr, Judy Kenyon, Laura Lanka, Nancy McCorkle, Donna Raven, Donna Standerwick and Marian Welch received the award. Group founder Jaynne Gott was recognized for introducing this ministry to the church. Barbara McCauley serves as coordinator and transports the quilts to Madigan. She’ll deliver 21 more quilts/quillos this week.
