Disis, a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center researcher and University of Washington professor, is working to develop vaccines that boost the immune system to prevent recurring breast and ovarian cancer.

Disis and her 35-member Tumor Vaccine Group based at the University of Washington are seeing promising results. In early clinical trials of patients with metastatic breast cancer, 40 percent still were alive nine years after vaccination.
