Chip-seal work continues on US Highway 101 near Lake Crescent

Road crews have begun a chip-seal project along a 12-mile section of Highway 101 on the southern edge of Lake Crescent, which will last through tomorrow (Friday, July 23).

Work is scheduled for 6 a.m.-7 p.m.

While the chip-seal work is being completed, motorists can expect delays of approximately 15-30 minutes. Flagmen and pilot cars will guide motorists through one lane of alternating traffic.

Motorists may also use an optional detour, using Highways 112 and 113 to travel north of the lake and bypass the scheduled roadwork.

Preparatory road repairs for the chip-sealing were completed earlier this summer.

Olympic National Park Superintendent Karen Gustin said that due to warmer temperatures and drier weather, routine road projects like this are usually completed during the summer months.

“This project will improve motor vehicle safety in the Lake Crescent area, so we ask for your understanding while the work is being completed,” Gustin said.

Following the chip-seal, the same stretch of Highway 101 will then be fog-sealed on July 26 and July 27. Fog sealing is a method of pavement preservation which adds a thin layer of additional asphalt and oil to fill in small cracks, hold chips in place, improve road appearance and prolong the life of the new pavement.

During the fog-seal phase, motorists can expect shorter delays.
