This year’s Relay For Life event Aug. 14-15 included several specialty theme laps and contests. Relay volunteers participated in Hula Hoop, Poker and Glow in the Dark laps and entered contests for decorating cupcakes, best birthday hat and an outfit judging contest called “Project Relay.” For this contest, each participating team made an outfit out of Sequim Gazette newspapers and duct tape. The outfits were modeled and judged with prizes awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners.

First place went to 9-year-old Thomas Reynolds, of Sequim, for his “Roman Gladiator” outfit. He was fully equipped with a sword and shield representing a true warrior in the fight against cancer.

Sequim resident Mary Ewing, also 9, was awarded second place for her “Indian Princess” outfit. Besides her dress, she was decorated from head to toe with jewelry made from duct tape including a braided necklace, earrings, ring and anklet.

Third place went to Rory MacDonald, 32, of Port Angeles, for his “Shoe Sale” ensemble. The outfit earned its name from the sign on the back reading “shoe sale!” He was decked out with a matching hat and bag. He let everyone know the bag was a “lunch box,” not a purse.
