Residents from Sequim and across the Olympic Peninsula joined a group riding 787 motorcycles in visiting and paying tribute to two, 5,000-pound pieces of twisted steel from New York City on Aug. 22. The pieces are to become part of a memorial in Kitsap County to be dedicated on Sept. 11, 2011, 10 years after the terrorist attacks in New York,  Pennsylvania and Virginia. According the Kitsap Sun, Lee and Donna Summers — a truck-driving duo from Texas — had been driving them from John F. Kennedy airport in New York since early August. Some reports estimated the motorcycle escort procession at 7.5 miles long.
