The Tip a Cop event at Sequim Applebee’s brought in more than $2,500 for Special Olympics Washington.

 

 

Officers from Sequim Police, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Port Townsend Police and Washington State Patrol took drink orders and greeted customers the evening of Thursday, Sept. 23.

 

 

Guests tipped the cops, with funds going to the Special Olympics to fund groups such as the Clallam County Orcas.

 

 

Special Olympics Washington fully funds the Orcas so the athletes don’t have to pay to play.

 

 

Twelve athletes rotated greeting customers in front of the restaurant.

 

 

“This community is close-knit and supportive,” Russ Bonham, a parent and coach, said about the support received.

 

 

Statewide, 26 Applebee’s Restaurants held similar events Thursday night.

 

 

Chief Deputy Ron Cameron, with the Clallam County Sheriff’s office, said he spoke to his coordinator and Sequim was the highest fundraising site that had reported so far.

 

 

“This money goes a long  way in helping this valuable program,” Cameron said.

 

 

About 8,000 athletes compete in the Special Olympics Washington programs each year.
