The Sequim Gazette earned the first-place General Excellence Award for Division III newspapers and six other first-place awards at the 2010 Washington Newspaper Publishers Association's Better Newspaper Conference, held last weekend in Wenatchee.
The Gazette took home a total of 26 awards, including 11 in advertising categories, eight for news writing, blogs and web content, three for photography and two for special sections.
The newspaper's "2010 Visitor's Guide" took home Best Special Section-Tourism/Community Guide for Divisions III and IV, awarded to the staff.
Michael Dashiell took home top honors in the News of the Weird category for "Truck Marks a Million Miles," a story about Paul Gautschi's long-running pickup.
Former Sequim Gazette writer Dana Casey was awarded Best General Feature Story (Long) for "Shattered Mind," an in-depth look at Dauna Cole's dissociative identity disorder brought about by sexual abuse.
The Gazette's first-place advertising awards went to: Harmony Liebert and Robert Morris, Best Single "Convey an Image" advertisement, for Northwest Eye Surgeons; Liebert and Melanie Reed, Best Use of Process Color in an Ad (smaller than full page), for Jamestown Family Medical Clinic; and Liebert and Reed, Best Use of Clip Art in an Ad, for Peninsula Paint Company.
It's the fifth time in six years the Sequim Gazette has taken top honors in its circulation group.
"Exciting ad count, good, creative, page placement good ... (and) special sections outstanding," judges wrote about the Gazette's advertising.
"Love the opinion pages; excellent mix of topics, reader input," judges commented about the Gazette's news and community events.
