German food brings American smiles

A “wunderbar” time was had at Suncrest Retirement Village’s Oktoberfest on Oct. 16.
The event featured a German buffet to benefit OlyCAP’s Meals on Wheels and dining programs in Clallam and Jefferson counties.
Karen Bert, OlyCAP senior nutrition outreach coordinator, said the event was also successful in creating awareness about senior nutrition and issues of hunger.
"Now that funding for social services is being cut across the state, people need to be aware that programs such as Meals on Wheels and the dining program are vitally important for many of our older citizens," Bert said.
Jerry Brummel, director of Suncrest, said they served about 160 meals.
Residents of Suncrest also hand-painted 120 plates for the cause with more than half sold so far.
“Everyone was pleased,” Brummel said.
“One of the bright things is that the residents had a great time. They are still talking about it and I’m still selling plates to new people.”
Members of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers played, and State Rep. Kevin Van De Wege and County Commissioner Steve Tharinger ate dinner with attendees.
