The race for Clallam County commissioner (3rd District) is a race between a candidate with no previous experience in either a management position or in elected office - and a candidate who is prepared by both training and experience.
After service in the U. S. Navy, I earned a baccalaureate degree in political science, a master's degree in education and a doctor of law degree. I have also completed post-baccalaureate coursework in constitutional law. During law school, I spent two summers in Washington, D.C., working for U.S. Sen. Warren G. Magnuson.
Returning to Clallam
County, I was elected to the Board of Freeholders. As chairman, I helped design a process that eventually resulted in the drafting and passage of the Clallam County Charter. As a county commissioner, I subsequently participated in the implementation of Clallam County's new charter government. I have chaired the Board of County Commissioners from 2000-2003, 2005-2006 and again since 2009.
I have served on numerous local, state and federal boards and committees, and I have testified before state and federal agencies, and committees of both houses of the Washington State Legislature and the U.S. Congress.
County government encompasses broad responsibilities, from asphalt to zoning. Priorities include law enforcement, the judicial system, public health, roads, land-use planning and veterans affairs. I represent Clallam County on the Olympic Area Agency on Aging, Olympic Air Pollution Control Authority, the Washington State Criminal Justice Treatment Account Panel, and the North Olympic Peninsula Resource Conservation and Development Council, among others. I am the board's veterans' liaison and I created an elder law seminar that was offered in Sequim. I have listed all my board assignments at www.re-electdoherty.info.
My opponent has made unsupportable statements about county government and the county budget and yet admits his lack of understanding. The budget responsibility of the Board of County Commissioners exceeds $70 million. As candidates for Clallam County commissioner, I believe that we have an obligation to understand the budget.
Clallam County is one of only two counties in the state of Washington that is debt-free, and I am proud of my efforts to initiate efficiencies, implement cost-effective solutions to local problems and to be a good steward of public funds. As a result of these efforts, I am the only local elected official appointed by the governor to the Washington state Committee on Transforming Washington's Budget.
I work collaboratively - with my colleagues, county employees, citizens, the business community and numerous groups and organizations. I will continue to build trust between area local governments, state and federal agencies. By working together, we get more accomplished, and my experience in leadership positions enables me to foster intergovernmental cooperation.
I have been honored to serve the residents of Clallam County. I put in long hours because I enjoy the position of county commissioner and I believe I can make a positive difference. I am proud of my record of service and results. I hope I have earned your vote.
- Mike Doherty, candidate for Clallam County commissioner, District 3.
My name is Robin Poole and I am running for Clallam County commissioner District 3.
You may not see me much on the campaign trail because I am fortunate enough to be able to work full time in a county plagued with unemployment. But if you are concerned about preserving current jobs and creating new ones for yourself and your family - I will lead that effort.
If you're concerned about having someone who will fight for a balanced county budget - and demand true fiscal accountability and transparency to folks in this county - I will lead that effort.
If you're concerned about over-regulation and the costly burden it imposes on all of us - I will make sure we have a balanced approach.
I will work full time for you!
Please vote for me, Robin Poole.
