On Jan. 11, Soroptimist International of Sequim honored two young women from Sequim High School as girl of the month: Fallon Schneider for December 2010 and Rachel Chumley for January 2011.

A senior at Sequim High School, Schneider enjoys volunteering in the community as a member of Honor Society and as president of Rotary’s Interact Club, exploring nontraditional careers for women through the Soroptimists’ Women In Networking program and playing bass clarinet in her seventh year of band.

Much of her time is dedicated to her job as a dietary aide at Dungeness Courte Alzheimer’s Community.
She also represents Sequim in parades and other community events around Washington as Irrigation Festival royalty queen.

She recently was accepted to Seattle University and plans to study international relations, global development and Spanish as well as studying abroad during her time there.

Chumley is the senior class president and is active in the school’s Leadership class. She is in many school clubs, including the Operetta Club, International Club and Honor Society.

She is a varsity cheerleader and has been in several high school plays and musicals since her freshman year.

This is Chumley’s third year as a first soprano in the high school’s Select Choir. She recently was selected to sing in the Washington Music Education Association’s All-State Symphonic Choir in February. She also will travel to New York this spring to sing at Carnegie Hall with the National Youth Choir.

Chumley has participated in various community festivals and service projects. One of her largest projects has been community involvement with the Winter Wishes assembly she organized last month.

Her plans after high school include study for a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in hospitality and tourism management.
