The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center is changing leadership with incoming director Taylor McDonald of Glenwood Springs, Colo., taking over for retiring director Sue Jacobs.

Jacobs has been a SARC employee since the facility opened in 1988 and director since 1992. Her last day is set for Friday, April 29. McDonald starts Monday, May 2.

“As the director, Sue Jacobs has been the face, heart and soul of SARC for almost 20 years,” said Sue Sorensen, SARC board chairman.

“Under her able management, leadership and guidance, SARC has prospered during the good times and major expansions but more importantly survived in spite of a failed maintenance/operations levy,” Sorensen said.

Jacobs was not involved in the hiring process that included 20 applicants from across the U.S. The position was advertised locally, on SARC’s website and with the Washington Recreation & Parks Association.

Sorensen said they reviewed education criteria and appropriate professional accomplishments with follow-up personal interviews.

“The selection process was comprehensive and unbiased and the results will ensure that SARC continues to operate in the efficient, thrifty and safe manner that has made it the great source of great community pride,” Sorensen said.

McDonald is a graduate of East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in recreation management and has more than 10 years of experience in the management and operations of aquatic facilities.

Her recreation background includes officiating adult sports leagues, programming youth activities and teaching fitness classes. She enjoys biking, camping and swimming.

Sorensen said McDonald welcomes SARC pass holders’ opinions and encourages people to meet her next week.
