A motorcyclist from Sequim was injured today, May 18, after skidding on her bike trying to avoid a deer.
According to the Washington State Patrol, Melody J. Miano, 53, of Sequim was operating a 2007 Harley-Davidson eastbound toward Port Townsend on State Route 20 at about 8:29 a.m.
Six miles southwest of Port Townsend at Anderson Lake Road, Miano spotted a deer in the roadway and attempted to avoid a collision, the report noted. According to the Washington State Patrol, she locked up the motorcycle's rear brakes and went into a skid across both lanes. The Harley-Davidson rolled onto its side and Miano was ejected. Both driver and motorcycle came to rest on the westbound shoulder.
Miano, who was wearing a helmet, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with chest injuries, according to the state patrol. The motorcycle sustained reportable damage and was towed.
Washington State Department of Transportation reported the highway closed at 8:40 a.m., one-way, alternating traffic established at 9 a.m., and the scene was cleared by 9:30 a.m.
