Gazette editor, former staffers win SPJ awards

Michael Dashiell, editor of the Sequim Gazette, won two awards at the Society of Professional Journalists’ Northwest Excellence in Journalism contest, announced Saturday, May 21, in Seattle.

 

Dashiell won second place in sports reporting for “A Mind for Design,” about George McMurray’s record-breaking motorcycle, in the non-daily newspaper division. He also took third place in feature photography for “A Great Snow Fall,” picturing Sydney O’Donnell snowboarding after a surprise snowfall in November 2010.

 

Former Gazette reporter Ariel Hansen, now a staff writer for the Times-News (Twin Falls, Idaho), took a third place in arts reporting in the daily newspapers division, circulation 25,000 or less.

 

Former Gazette reporter Brier Dudley, now a columnist for the Seattle Times, took second place for his business column in the daily newspapers division, circulation 65,000-plus.

 

Paul Gottlieb of the Peninsula Daily News took third place in investigative reporting in the daily newspapers division, circulation 25,000 or less.

 

Roger Harnack, formerly of Sequim and now publisher at The Omak-Okanagan, earned three SPJ awards, including first place in both editorial/commentary and feature photography.

 

The contest is held annually by Region 10 of SPJ to honor exceptional journalism in Alaska, Oregon,
Washington, Idaho and Montana.
