At the May 18 annual membership meeting at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sequim, the League of Women Voters of Clallam County honored two teachers: David Ketter, a biology teacher at Sequim High School, and Brenda Manson, a science teacher at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles.

The league sought nominations from Clallam County school districts to recognize teachers who have made an outstanding contribution in the teaching of environmental and sustainability principles within the learning standards established by the Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Both teachers created learning experiences that took students out of the classroom to conduct studies in actual field sites, including the Elwha River, wastewater treatment plants and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.

Their students participated in interdisciplinary units, which included science, history, math and economic issues.

The teachers said they plan to continue their work next year through grants and community partnerships.
