Just in time for the season, Shannon Brooks has released her first book, “Noel: Christmas Retold.”

The book includes a novella retelling the story of the first Noel, accompanied by two related short stories.

“Mercy’s Dream” is a modern version of the story, while “Assigned” provides what Brooks calls “an angelic behind the scenes” take on the Nativity.

Brooks, who spent her teen years in Sequim, said she brought to the book her love of writing and the storytelling techniques she was known for as a teacher and tutor of inner-city children in Los Angeles.

After 12 years spent providing inner-city outreach, Brooks recently returned to Sequim to take care of her grandmother, Claire Burnham.

Brooks said she has a passion for bringing to life stories that still have significance in our modern world. She chose the Nativity for her first published story.

“That story makes Christmas real and special for me every year,” she said, “whether I’m able to be home with my family for the holidays, or I’m in an unfamiliar place. I wanted to share this story first, in a new and fresh way, because it brings so much joy and peace and hope.”

“Noel: Christmas Retold” is available at The Good Book, Pacific Mist, Frick’s, Sunny Farms and Twice-Loved Books.
