Four months after quashing proposed improvements to U.S. Highway 101 in Blyn, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe is taking a different approach to safety on the east end of the tribal campus.
Chief Operations Officer Annette Nesse said about 50 people attended a Feb. 21 meeting to update the public on improvement projects.
The original improvement plans unveiled in October 2010 were not popular among local residents, who didn’t like the proposed indirect turns and realignment of East Sequim Bay Road in particular. The $30 million project proposed several big changes with the goal of improving safety, including creating median openings allowing U-turn movements and bidirectional travel along Highway 101 through indirect left turns, realigning East Sequim Bay Road more directly to Highway 101 and combining access to Chicken Coop Road and Zaccardo Road into one 90-degree intersection.
While the public comment received ultimately put an end to the project, some useful suggestions came from it as well, Nesse said.
Some public comment proposed the idea of implementing traffic-calming measures on Old Blyn Highway past the tribal campus without making road improvements.
Traffic-calming measures could include painted crosswalks, crossing lights for pedestrians to push when they wanted to walk and other measures to make them more visible to drivers, Nesse said.
So far the plan still is conceptual.
“We’re trying to improve the safety of vehicles turning into the campus and pedestrians crossing from the parking lots,” she said.
The tribe is funding the improvements and hopes to begin construction this summer, she said.
The Chicken Coop Road and Zaccardo Road intersection improvement, a much larger project, still is in the design phase and funding has not been established yet, she said.
