Local residents can get immediate help in Sequim to brush up on reading, writing and math skills; learn English as a Second Language; or prepare for the General Educational Development test (GED).

Four mornings a week, from 8 a.m.-noon Monday-Thursday, Peninsula College instructors are providing small- and large-group instruction in reading, writing, mathematics and basic computer skills to prepare individuals for the GED test for high school equivalency or to transition to college classes. The classes are held at the Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St., Room 8W. These classes are free of charge.

The classes are open-entry: Students can begin studies at any time during the quarter and fit classes around their own schedules. Community residents who have their high school diplomas but wish to improve their skills in reading, writing and math in order to prepare for the job market also are welcome. Instruction will be tailored to individual needs.

Those whose native language is not English and who want to improve their English skills can get help in reading, writing, speaking, listening, pronunciation and interaction skills three afternoons a week, as well as evenings, at the Sequim Community School. The open-entry classes are offered from 1-4 p.m. and again from 5-8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The charge is $25 per quarter for ESL classes.
